Sun Valley's World Famous Snow Making

November 22nd, 2008 6:32pm

Snow Making Department Supervisor Dennis Harper gives us a behind-the-scenes tour of Sun Valley's legendary automated snow creation system. Over 570 automated snow guns mix compressed air and water to blanket Baldy with layers of man-made snow. Snow making kicks off about two to three weeks before opening day begins and continues unabated, 24 hours a day through out the rest of the season.

Snowmaking Commences on Sun Valley's Bald & Dollar Mountains

The guns are running! After a light dusting of snow on the Valley floor earlier this week and a more significant accumulation (eight inches) atop Bald Mountain, the Sun Valley Company has turned on the snow guns on Bald and Dollar Mountain in an effort to meet their Thanksgiving Day opening.

Crosstoberfest 2008

Bikers of all disciplines descended on Bald Mountain for Crosstoberfest 2008, a cyclo-cross race that serves as Idaho's State Championship and now is in its sixth year. Crosstoberfest, however, is not only for cyclo-cross enthusiasts. The two-day event features a number of children's activities as well as the best Octoberfest has to offer including a Bavarian beer & food tent. As Sam Cochran of the Sun Valley Company puts it Crosstoberfest is "a bike race and a big party."

The Sun Valley Pavilion

Jack Sibbach guides us through Sun Valley's new icon, the Sun Valley Pavilion. The newly opened structure will play home to the summer symphony, as well as number of other events including dance, theater and the 2008 Writers' Conference. This beautiful and versatile theater would not have been possible without the creative and financial support of The Sun Valley Company, Mrs. Carol Holding and Sun Valley Company GM Wally Huffman.
