Snowmaking Commences on Sun Valley's Bald & Dollar Mountains

The guns are running! After a light dusting of snow on the Valley floor earlier this week and a more significant accumulation (eight inches) atop Bald Mountain, the Sun Valley Company has turned on the snow guns on Bald and Dollar Mountain in an effort to meet their Thanksgiving Day opening.

Jon Duval of the Idaho Mountain Express reports:

"Sun Valley Co. spokesman Jack Sibbach said this morning that approximately 8 inches of snow fell on the top of the mountain during the storm that hit Monday night, which should help the resort reach its target date for opening, Thursday, Nov. 27. However, Sibbach said unseasonably warm weather last week meant the snow guns were not turned on until four or five days later than usual.

Typically, Sun Valley strives to offer some top-to-bottom skiing for opening weekend but, as is so with every ski season, how many runs are open depends largely on the weather."

With a little help from Mother Nature (and the Sun Valley Company's mechanical friends), residents and visitors of the Wood River Valley will be enjoying snow-covered trails with their turkey. So wax up those boards and skis, friends and if you haven't already, start conditioning so your first runs of the season aren't also your last. [Winter Conditioning with Kyl Samway]
